A Star Is Born: Review

A Star Is Born tells the story of Jackson Maine (Bradley Cooper), an alcoholic country rock star, and Ally (Lady Gaga, a drag bar waitress with a beautiful voice. While battling his own demons, Jackson discovers and falls in love with Ally. This film tells the story of their lives together, with her increasing star power and his dwindling star power and their love through the music that they each create.
A Star is Born is a heart-wrenching story of love, fame, and loss. It discusses the troubles of fame and the effects that the "limelight" has on an individual. A Star is Born deals with substance abuse and depression-through the male lead, Jackson Maine-in a real and unafraid way that most films now do not. The film is written well, and the lines are delivered so naturally by Gaga and Cooper. As an aside, there is a scene that takes place in a drag bar that I just find hilarious. Gaga and Cooper have so much on-screen chemistry that it makes the viewer care more about the lead characters. However, all the other characters are only in the story to advance the plot. No insight is gained in the supporting characters' personality, behavior, or the relationship between. Bradley Cooper has directed A Star is Born so well, and with this, he now has film lovers everywhere wanting to see what he does next. Finally, the music in this film is beautifully done-"Shallow" is nominated for an Oscar and 4 Grammys, including Record and Song of the Year-and the live recording of the music only adds to the realness of the film.
