With great potential that’s ultimately wasted, Gemini Man is a bland and loosely written action movie cheapened by expensive visual effects.

Gemini Man: Film Review
Directed by Ang Lee
Written by David Benioff, Billy Ray, Darren Lemke
Starring Will Smith, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Clive Owen, Benedict Wong
Gemini Man follows Henry Brogan (Will Smith), an aging assassin, who is followed and targeted by a mysterious young hitman who can anticipate his every move. Lo and behold, the hitman is a younger version of him created by a covert organization.
I was so disappointed in this movie, mainly because of the wasted potential that this movie had. This movie could have been great. It had visionary Ang Lee (dir. Brokeback Mountain, Life of Pi), Will Smith in the lead, and a promising premise that was fairly original (and if not original, had not been done in a while). It could have been so good, but alas, my review. The film is almost too ambitious with its technology. The 3D and HFR (high frame rate) is what took me out of it mostly. They made the movie look more fake and cheapened. Everything moved too fast and it all looked animated. As my brother stated, "It looked like a video game" (the truest statement I think I've ever heard him say). In fact, the 3D isn’t necessary for most of this movie. A lot of the film's scenes are just people talking with ultra-focus on the people to create extreme depth. It doesn't look right. In all honesty, I probably would have liked it more if I had seen it in 2D. Granted, the script would still be lackluster, but the film wouldn't have as many visual problems. On the bright side though, the movie boasts strong performances from Will Smith (possibly the best part about it). Also, the de-aging actually worked for the most part. There is a scene near the end where he's looking a little Jimmy Timmy Power Hour if you know what I'm saying (in case you don't, he looks very different from his environment and people around him).
