A moderately enjoyable family film, Sonic The Hedgehog owes a lot of its minor success to Sonic's redesign and a strong cast.

Sonic The Hedgehog: Film Review
Directed by Jeff Fowler
Written by Patrick Casey, Josh Miller
Starring James Marsden, Ben Schwartz, Jim Carrey, Tika Sumpter, Natasha Rothwell
From Rotten Tomatoes:
Sonic The Hedgehog is a live-action adventure comedy based on the global blockbuster video game franchise from Sega that centers on the infamously brash bright blue hedgehog. The film follows the (mis)adventures of Sonic as he navigates the complexities of life on Earth with his newfound -- human -- best friend Tom Wachowski (James Marsden). Sonic and Tom join forces to try and stop the villainous Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) from capturing Sonic and using his immense powers for world domination.
ALL HAIL THE REDESIGN! Just kidding, but for real tho ... I know for a fact that if the makers of this film kept the original design of Sonic that this review would be docked AT LEAST one star. Sonic redesigned looks so good. He, to me, was the best part of the movie. He was the most consistent from a writing standpoint and he was funny. Jim Carrey was a little heavy-handed with the physical comedy. I know that's his schtick, but it was a little much for me. And James Marsden lost all respect for me when he did Hop (2011, dir. Tim Hill). This is his second movie as a sidekick to a furry CGI creature that can talk. Now, I loved Natasha Rothwell. I love her in pretty much everything that she does (if you haven't seen Insecure, please watch it, unless you are the target audience of this film, then DO NOT!). She's hilarious. Aside from that though, nothing in this film really did anything for me. Part of that might have something to do with the fact that I wasn't a huge Sonic fan, or that I'm not 8 years old. The writing was subpar, and the entire film just seemed juvenile. This is very much a kids movie. It's been a minute since I've seen a true kids film, meaning that there is nothing here for older audiences (in the eyes of this film, I am older audiences). If you're outside the target audience, I doubt that you'll enjoy this too much. My friends really enjoyed this, which surprised me because they were talking a lot of sh*t during the movie, but hey, what do I know?
