Black Panther: Film Review

Black Panther tells the story of T'Challa, King of Wakanda. T'Challa (Chadwick Boseman) is faced with an unassuming foe, Erik Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan), a criminal with Wakandan roots who feels that Wakanda is not doing enough for people around the world. The film follows T'Challa as he has to deal with moral and ethical issues surrounding Killmonger and being King of a sovereign nation.
The film is written very well. Black Panther is insightfully written by Coogler and Cole, and has a powerful message. The film serves as a cultural milestone for African-Americans, with it being the first superhero film with an almost all-black cast. The film is acted and cast very well with Boseman taking the lead. Michael B. Jordan gives a fantastic and powerful performance as Killmonger, the villain with justifiable intentions. The action scenes, while they look spectacular, are slightly boring, and they seem to take away from the story. Because of that, the string focus on story works to the film’s advantage. The production design and the use of color within Wakanda is beautiful. The waterfalls and the subterranean Wakanda are especially breathtaking. It is full of great costume and hairstyle design. The costume team has successfully blended traditional African attire with casual attire and armor. Ryan Coogler has outdone himself with Black Panther, a stunning visual achievement.
